One of the most smuggled commodities into the Solway Firth was Rum! There are stories of tax collectors looking the other way on nights when a drop was being made. As a token of thanks, the smugglers have been known to leave casks of rum on the beach. One of the “story keepers” of Solway history is Captain Roy Kerr, owner of the tall-ship La Malouine. When you visit southern Scotland, you can enquire at any of the ports regarding his whereabouts and take a tour of the ship, share a cuppa, and enjoy a story or two!
